Brandon Handy of Mount Airy was recently promoted to the rank of major in the Florida Air National Guard.

Major Handy was stationed at the 601 Air and Space Operations Center, Tyndall AFB, Fla., where he was a strategy planner from March 2011 to September of this year. During this period, Handy was the instrumental in the planning and execution of all Department of Defense aviation activities in the Continental United States in support of Homeland Defense.

Upon Handy’s promotion in September he was transferred to Headquarters, First Air Force/Air Forces Northern, to serve as the Chief, Command and Control, Weapons and Tactics at Tyndall AFB, Fla.

Handy is a 1996 graduate of Patrick County High School in Stuart, Va. He holds a bachelor’s degree in professional aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He is the son of Annette Handy of Mount Airy and Benny Handy of Nathrop, Colo. He is the grandson of Melvin and Iola Hubbard of Meadows of Dan, Va., and the late William Lloyd Handy of Meadows of Dan.

Air Force Airman Jordan Brooks graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Brooks is the granddaughter of Brenda Jurney of Red Hawk Lane, Winston-Salem.

She is a 2011 graduate of Carroll County High School, Hillsville, Va.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Elizabeth M. Proffit graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

She is the daughter of Dawn Worrell of Snake Creek Road, Hillsville, Va.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

She is a 2012 graduate of Carroll County High School, Hillsville.
