Sydney Mosley bounced back from a cold shooting night to lead the Cardinals with 20 points Friday.

PILOT MOUNTAIN — Two wins in its own tournament has lifted East Surry to a sterling 10-1 record headed into the new year.

The Lady Cardinals won both Thursday and Friday in the Christmas basketball tournament featuring three local schools, four Wilkes County schools and North Stokes.

The Lady Cards won their games by an average of 22.5 points. First, they beat Wilkes Central 59-41, then they stopped East Wilkes 66-39.

Against the Lady Eagles, East’s outside tandem of Sydney Mosley and Gabi Jessup had an off-night shooting. They combined to go 5-17 from the floor.

Center Keri Fulp carried the scoring load with 26 points on 9-17 from the field and 8-9 from the foul line. She reached another double-double with 17 rebounds as well as blocking four shots, getting two steals and making two assists.

Point guard Lauren Thompson didn’t take a shot from the field, but she made 4-6 free throws, a team-high six steals and three rebounds.

Mosley had a team-high four assists to go with four steals and six rebounds.

A strong second quarter provided East Surry with a double-digit cushion on the way to a 27-point blowout over East Wilkes.

The home team went up four points at 16-12 going into the second, then took charge with an 18-7 quarter.

Mosley came up huge in the first half, Gunter said. She scored 17 points – half of the team’s 34 – and dished out five assists.

Not only that, but she played good defense on East Wilkes’ star guard Erin Royal, holding her to five points in the first half and seven for the game.

“The team defense was pretty good,” said Gunter. The girls tried to contest most of East Wilkes’ threes and then box out so that the visitors couldn’t get any second chances.

East Wilkes also was limited on looks inside. Fulp blocked two shots, and Mosley and Marion blocked one each. They also altered several more attempts.

The coach was proud of the way his team valued the ball. The Cards nearly had as many steals as turnovers.

Mosley finished with seven assists, and the whole team had 24, while committing just 12 turnovers. Then the defense generated 10 steals and deflected six other balls.

Mosley led the team with 20 points. She and Jessup bounced back well from Thursday’s off-night. They combined to go 11-20 (55 percent), including 3-6 from long range. Jessup had eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Fulp posted a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds to go with four assists, three steals and no turnovers.

Markle and Marion came off the bench to provide 11 and eight points respectively, hitting 9-14 from the field. Emma Slater added four.

East Surry (10-1) has won five straight games since its only loss of the season to Surry Central. The next game is Jan. 4 at Bishop McGuinness, 4-0 in Northwest Conference play.
