According to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, a 50-year-old Fancy Gap, Va., man was fatally injured Tuesday night in a hunting accident in Laurel Fork, Va..
Sanford Ray Semones, 50, was shot and killed with a muzzleloader by a juvenile hunting companion, said Jeff Pease, Hunter Education Coordinator for VDGIF in Southwest Virginia. Pease said the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department received a call at approximately 5:58 p.m. Tuesday in reference to a hunting accident off Willis Gap Road.
At that point, the Sheriff’s Office contacted the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, who then sent conservation police officers to the scene to investigate. According to Pease, the incident occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m.
“The hunters were deer hunting. This was late muzzleloader season and they were hunting for deer with muzzleloaders,” Pease said. “The shooter allegedly mistook the victim for a deer and shot with a muzzleloader and it was a fatal wound.”
Pease said it was his understanding that the victim was not wearing blaze orange.
“It is not required to wear blaze orange in late muzzleloader season,” Pease said. “It would be recommended from a safety standpoint, but not required.”
Pease said Senior Officer George Shupe is the primary investigating officer in the case, which is still under investigation.
