MOUNT AIRY — Mr. Bobby Greene “Bob” Johnson, 77, of Mount Airy, husband of Mrs. Barbara Harriman Johnson, passed away Sunday morning, Jan. 6, 2013, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. He was born Feb. 23, 1935, in Surry County to the late Harvey Andrew and Estelle Gunnell Johnson. Bob attended Westfield High School and ASU at Boone. He taught school (history and math) for several years and was a girls basketball coach. Later he decided he wanted to work with farmers, so he quit teaching and became a fertilizer salesman. He was co-owner of Rainbow Farm Store and president of the company. He traveled for IMC Fertilizer in Winston-Salem for 35 years, then later traveled for Winston Weaver Fertilizer for 15 years. He loved his work and the people he worked with. Bob was the founder and owner of Rainbow Childcare, Rainbow Gift Baskets & Furniture at Mayberry Mall and Outdoors Ice Cream and Pizza Shop. Bob was a member of Indian Grove Baptist Church since early childhood. He was also a member of the Men’s Sunday school class and a member of the choir. His biggest dream was to see a new fellowship hall at the church. He was on the planning board and was on the financial board. He was in a gospel quartet in younger days, traveling to different churches to sing. Another big dream of his was to see Indian Grove Family Cemetery bigger and prettier. He was on the board of trustees for the cemetery. Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Barbara Harriman Johnson of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Mike Lipp of Sapphire, Kristy and Brian Ellison of Madison and Kim and Andy Utt of Mount Airy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenny and Janice Johnson of Mount Airy and Ricky Johnson of Huntersville; three stepchildren, Larry and Patsy Harriman of Mount Airy, Gary and Sherri Harriman of Mount Airy and Deborah Parker of Winston-Salem; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; extended children, to Bob are: Matthew Moore of Lawsonville, Tim Simpson of Mount Airy and Penny and Joe Smith of Mount Airy. Besides his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his dear friend and second mother, Ada Bell Haymore; several uncle, aunts and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at Indian Grove Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Tommy Floyd and the Rev. Franklin D. Harmon Jr. Mr. Johnson will lie in state one hour prior to the service at Indian Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Indian Grove Family Cemetery.
