Bishop McGuinness defeated the Mount Airy varsity boys and girls swim teams on Monday for the second time this season.

The meet was especially close between the girl swimmers, who at the halfway mark were within three points of one another, with Bishop ahead. The Mount Airy girls came into the swim meet with a 5-1 record after defeating North Surry last week.

The Mount Airy boys’ record is now 4-3 and the girls is 5-2.

The competition between the two teams was spirited, and Head Coach Jay Williams said the Bears team did well against what he considers a “powerhouse” team in Bishop McGuinness. Williams’ said Bishop brings tough competition to each swim meet and is one of the top programs in the state.

The coach said that he was pleased overall with how the Bears matched up and said he saw a future that is very promising for the Mount Airy boys and girls swim teams.

“I think the boys were doing what we asked of them and were making technique improvements. The girls were doing well also, but we still haven’t seen the best from our kids yet.”Williams said an exciting part of his job as this team’s coach is watching the hard work and dedication of the swimmers begin to “gel” into competitive swimming technique.

“At this stage, we are seeing a new level coming into the swimmers’ technique and they have worked hard in these areas.” He said they had improved also in the area of body position.

In particular, Williams said, Ivy Marion on the girls team did exceptionally well and “swam a wonderful race.” Marion cut two seconds off her time in the 100 yard butterfly and qualified for the regional finals.

The final home match will be next Monday against Surry Central and held at the Reeves Community Center.
