HILLSVILLE, Va. — Mount Airy wrestling traveled up to Carroll County and came home with two wins Thursday.

The Granite Bears (24-11) beat Pulaski 45-25 and then beat the host school 52-16.

Shay Wilson, Triston Mabry and Andrew Moore have all been battling each other for two starting spots at 145 and 152. Coach Steve Braune said Shay dropped down to 138 for the first time this season so that all three were in the starting lineup.

In one other lineup change, Jamie Smith beat out Kenyon Smith for the starting 132 spot. The two have gone back and forth a few times this season, but both have been successful. They had a combined 23-12 record coming into this tri-match.

The Pulaski match began at the lowest weight. At 106, Alex Howard took a 3-1 decision win.

At 113, Daniel Sechrist pinned his opponent in 21 seconds.

Colton McMillian was out at 120, so the Bears gave up a forfeit.

Jackson Blizzard (126) earned a pin in 3:40.

Jamie Smith gave up an 11-0 major decision at 132.

Wilson didn’t get to show off his weight as he earned a forfeit in both matches.

Mabry won a 10-8 decision at 145, but tweaked his shoulder and sat out the second match.

Moore earned a pin in 1:28 at 152. Dallas Smith (160) received a forfeit.

Landon Mumford (170) had a great match with a late score to win a close 11-9 decision, Braune said. However, Mumford had a sore knee afterward, so Braune sat him for the second match.

At 182, Austin Branch was pinned in the first period.

Nick Kendall (195) went to overtime tied 3-3. Then his opponent got a two-point takedown for the victory.

Mason Timmerman (220) pinned his man in the closing seconds of the first period.

Heavyweight Brian Bennett pinned his opponent in 1:06.

Against Carroll County, neither team had a wrestler at 120, so there was a double forfeit with no points earned for either team.

At 126, Blizzard got a forfeit. At 132, Jamie Smith won a 9-1 major decision.

Wilson received a forfeit at 138, but Mabry gave back a forfeit at 145.

Moore wrestled to a 7-4 decision win, giving the Bears a 19-6 advantage.

With Mumford out at 170, Braune decided to bump Dallas Smith up to that class.

Taking his spot at 160 was David Luna, who was pinned in 1:44.

Dallas was behind 3-2 in the closing seconds of the final period, said Braune. Smith took down his opponent for two points for a 4-3 win. That made it 22-12 Mount Airy.

Carroll County didn’t have any big wrestlers and gave up forfeits at 182 (Branch), 195 (Kendall), 220 (Timmerman) and heavyweight (Bennett). That gave the Bears 24 team points and a 46-12 advantage that clinched the match.

At 106, Howard lost a major decision 14-5. Then Sechrist got a fall in just 32 seconds to finish the night.

Braune said the best performance of the night was probably Andrew Moore (22-4).

Moore has wrestled some at 145, so he is smaller than the other 152-pounders, and the Carroll County wrestler was one who beat Dallas Smith before dropping down from 160.

Moore edged the Carroll boy 7-4 and pinned the other in a minute and a half, the coach pointed out.

The Bears don’t get a chance to rest as they travel to Kernersville tonight to face Bishop McGuinness in a conference match.

The weight to watch should be at 126 with Blizzard (16-4) taking on Alexander Preudhomme (27-4).
