STUART, Va. — Mount Airy earned two lopsided wrestling wins on the road this week.

The Granite Bears traveled to Patrick County Wednesday for a tri-match with the home team and Bassett.

The Bears (27-13) won 55-18 over Patrick and 63-15 over Bassett.

Mount Airy doesn’t have anyone at the 120-pound class and gave up a forfeit in each match, noted Coach Steve Braune. So that means the Bears gave up just 21 points via wrestling in two matches, he said.

Mount Airy had a much different lineup this week. Young, but talented freshman Kenyon Smith (10-4 at 132 lbs.) moved away.

Freshman Cameron Pack dropped down from 138 to 132 to take that slot.

Dallas Smith (160) was out sick, so Austin Branch took that spot. Typically, Branch is giving up about 20 lbs. on his opponent by wrestling up at 182.

Filling in for Branch at 182 was senior Kolte Poore.

Mason Timmerman had to sit out both matches after receiving a flagrant-misconduct ruling in the last match with East Surry. Senior Zaqwan Dobson filled in at 220.

At heavyweight, junior Isaiah King beat out incumbent starter Brian Bennett in a wrestle-off in practice.

The match with Patrick County started at 145 lbs. Triston Mabry pinned Dustin Tucker in the second period.

Andrew Moore (152) finished in an 8-8 tie with Zachary Tickle. Then in sudden-victory overtime, Tickle got a takedown for the win.

At 160, Branch pinned Miguel Rodriguez in the third period. Landon Mumford (170) pinned Zachary Overby in the first.

Poore (182) lost a minor decision 10-5 to Isaac Wood.

Nick Kendall (195) was pinned by Corey Rorrer. Other than the forfeit at 120, that would be the last win for Patrick County.

Dobson received a forfeit at 220.

At 285, King, who weighs 245 lbs., pinned Brode Corns early in the second period.

Alex Howard dominated his 106 match for a 19-3 technical fall over Elijah Ethier.

Daniel Sechrist received a forfeit at 113, then the Bears gave one back at 120.

At 126, Jackson Blizzard put in two great periods and built a nice lead, Braune said. Then he didn’t do as well in the third period, but held on for a 10-9 decision over Ezra Carnes.

Pack (132) pinned Noah Wolfe in the first period.

Shay Wilson (138) also had a one-sided match end in a technical fall as he outpointed Ryan Pennington 18-3 in the final weight for the 55-18 team win.

Braune said he was proud to see his team bounce back strong from a very tough loss to East Surry last week.

In the second match, the Bears beat Bassett 63-15.

The first time Mount Airy faced Bassett on Jan. 3, the final margin was 49 points; in this one, the margin was 48 points.

The outcome was never in jeopardy as Mount Airy took eight of the first nine weight classes.

Starting off at 152, Moore pinned Joshua Hale in the second period.

At 160, Branch pinned Jesse Helms in 1:10. Mumford (170) pinned Jose Alen in the second period.

Chris Davis gave Bassett its only pin at 182 over Poore.

Kendall got a forfeit at 195, and King had one at 285, sandwiched around Dobson earning a fall in the second period over Chris Hylton.

At 106, Howard and Cole Davis had an exciting match with a lot of takedowns and escapes, according to Braune. It came right down to the end with Alex earning a 9-7 decision, he said.

Sechrist got his second forfeit of the night at 113, then Mount Airy gave up one at 120.

Another tight match occurred at 126 where Blizzard and Jacob Hale battled for three periods. Hale squeaked out a 3-2 minor decision.

At 132, Pack got the quickest pin of the night, taking down Drew Smith in 1:01.

Wilson received a forfeit at 138, and Mabry finished the match with a pin of A’vuntae Clemmons in the second period.

Mabry had a good night, said Braune. He started the night with a pin and finished it with a second pin.

The freshman Pack had two pins in the first period, just the second night he’s wrestled at 132 after spending most of the season at 138.

Branch showed what he can do when he is facing someone his own size. After starting the new year with four straight losses, Branch has now gone 5-3 in the past eight matches.

Mount Airy is scheduled to travel to West Stokes tonight, but the expected icy weather could change that.
