DOBSON — North Surry took 10 of 14 weight classes to defeat Surry Central 49-14 in wrestling Thursday.
The Greyhounds didn’t give up a fall and held four of the Golden Eagles’ best wrestlers to decisions.
“I felt like we stepped up and wrestled very well tonight,” said North Coach Eric Jessup. “And we had to. Surry Central is a quality team. They are as well coached as any team around.”
Wes Brown (285) and Nathon Bautista (106) usually are a guaranteed 12 points back to back in a match, said Jessup. So he considered it a success to hold them to eight points.
Bautista controlled his match with Saige Wolfe, but never got a pin or technical fall in, winning 17-3.
Brown won an 11-3 major decision on Austin Akers.
The first time those two faced off, Brown pinned Akers in less than a minute, noted Jessup. In their second match, it ended in 2:33. This time, Akers, a freshman, lasted the whole match and even had a couple of chances to score on the senior, the coach pointed out.
That was only the second time in Wes’ 31 wins that someone has gone the distance with him, so it shows Austin is learning, according to Jessup.
As for the night on whole, with one forfeit and 13 matches held, Jessup said, “I was very pleased that we didn’t give up a single pin.”
The Eagles couldn’t pull out the close ones and couldn’t get pins in the ones where they were winning, said Central Coach Stephen Priddy.
“North is really good,” he said. “There’s a reason they are ranked second in the state and getting first-place votes.”
At 113, North’s Jacob Humphries pinned Garrett Johnson in 42 seconds.
At 120, it was Pack versus Mac as Central’s Kevin Pack faced Austin McMillian. Mac got three early takedowns on the way to a 14-2 major decision.
At 126, North’s Tristen Brannock won a narrow 4-2 decision over Mason Snow.
At 132, the match was only three points until Central’s Uriel Secundino tried a risky move late and was caught by Austin Rozier for an 8-1 decision.
North’s Caleb Lowe (138) and Raymond Dance battled fairly evenly for three periods, but Lowe outpointed Danced 11-6.
At 145, North’s Devyn Green pinned Tyler White in 55 seconds.
At 152, North’s Austin McBride pinned Dallas Snow in the second period.
Central’s Zack Martin took a narrow 4-2 decision over Dalton Golden at 160.
North’s Austin Collins pinned Calvin Inman at the end of the first period at 170.
North’s Corbin Bullins (182) had the fastest match of the night, pinning Alex Hernandez in 25 seconds.
Levi Slate received a forfeit at 195 as Central’s Bryant White bumped up to 220 to take the place of Humberto Moreira, who was out.
White earned a 5-1 win over Cody Slate in a very close match.
The younger Slate tried to throw White and got caught on bottom himself to give up the first two points of the match.
If it weren’t for that, it could very well have been a 1-1 tie in the final minute, Jessup said.
This match was moved up from Friday to avoid any icy weather today.
