PILOT MOUNTAIN — Ms. Anna Maude Dean, 79, of Pilot Mountain, died Thursday, Jan. 31, at the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, after a short illness. Ms. Dean was born in Ironton, Ohio, on Nov. 20, 1933, to Gerard Kinner Dean and Annie Elizabeth Bruce Dean. She graduated from Baptist Hospital Nursing School in Winston-Salem. Ms. Dean graduated from Baptist Hospital Nurse Anesthetist School in 1966 and was a nurse anesthetist at Northern Hospital of Surry from 1971 until retiring in 2006. Up until her illness, she dedicated her life to family and working to eliminate homeless pets. She was one of the founders of the Surry Humane Society and worked extensively in the early years to establish the Surry Animal Shelter. Earlier in her life, she was active in Medical ministries and enjoyed beach travels and classic movies. She is survived by her “babies,” Mutley, Buster, Mooch, Mickey, Snowball and Crissy. She is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, K. Bruce Dean and Marge Dean of Denton, Texas; and a niece and nephew, Dr. Harry Wilson and wife, Jaye Stansbury Wilson, of Pilot Mountain and Deborah A. Wilson of Potomac Falls, Va. In addition to her parents, Ms. Dean was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Dean Wilson and Ruth Marie Dean; and a brother, John Tilden Dean. The family will receive friends at a celebration of her life at Moody Funeral Home, 206 W. Pine St., Mount Airy, NC, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to Best Friends, 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, UT 84741.
