DOBSON – Surry Community College will host its All Skills Baseball Clinic on Saturday, Feb. 16.
Former professional players will assist Coach Jamie Lowe and his staff in teaching boys and girls ages 6-16 in the fundamentals of the game.
The camp will last four hours, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at SCC’s Angus J. Tucker Field. In the case of inclement weather, the sessions will be held in the college gym.
Camp registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on that morning with kids split up by age and/or playing ability. The cost to attend is $50, which includes a clinic T-shirt.
The instruction will cover all the basics such as hitting, fielding, throwing, pitching, base-running, catching and the mental aspects of the game.
The camp will feature two former Major League Baseball players and current Houston Astros catcher Ben Heath.
Ed Goodson, a Pulaski, Va., native, played more than 500 games in eight seasons in the majors. A career .260 hitter, he batted .302 in his best season with the San Francisco Giants. He played both first and third base.
Danny Sheaffer played in 389 games over seven seasons in the big leagues. He played catcher, third base and the outfield for four teams. In his best season, he hit .278 for the Colorado Rockies.
Heath is a former Penn State star who set a school single-season record with 19 homers as a junior in 2010.
In the past three years, Heath’s batting average has actually gone up with each step up in difficulty he makes.
In rookie ball, he batted .248. At the single-A level he batted .257. In the A-Advanced league, he hit .283, then at AA he batted .314.
The 24-year-old Heath is a native of Martinsville, Va.
Joining Lowe and his special guests will be current assistant coaches Wayne Edmonds, Shane Worth and Tim Collins, as well as current and former Knight players.
Campers are asked to bring a bat, glove and helmet. They should have both regular spikes and indoor athletic shoes, in case the sessions are moved into the gym.
The camp will be limited to the first 100 participants.
