DOBSON — Felony charges have been filed against two sisters stemming from their alleged removal of items from the home of a man one of the women was dating.
Brittany Nicole King, 22, of 206 Catfish Trail, Lowgap, was arrested by Surry County deputies Monday on charges of felonious larceny and felony possession of stolen goods.
Warrants for identical violations have been issued against her sister, Kayla Nicole King, 22, of the same address in Lowgap.
“She hasn’t been arrested,” Detective Jeremy Luffman of the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, the investigating officer, said Wednesday afternoon.
Even though both are 22, the sisters are not twins, but 10 months apart in age, with records showing that Kayla King was born in March 1990 and is about to turn 23, while Brittany King’s birth date is January 1991, meaning she just turned 22.
They are accused of stealing property and money from the home of Chris Slate, a man said to be in his 20s who was living on Maple Drive, Mount Airy, at the time of the incident last month.
“I think Kayla actually dated the victim at one point,” the detective said. Slate recently was hospitalized, “and while he was in the hospital, I guess they decided to take everything,” Luffman added of the sisters.
Sheriff Graham Atkinson said they were implicated due to neighbors witnessing them carrying property from Slate’s residence.
“The items, which included electronics and collectibles, were then pawned at a local pawn shop,” Atkinson said. Cash also was taken from the home, and while Luffman said electronics mostly were targeted in the theft, jewelry was involved as well.
A total value was not available for the loss.
However, a portion of the property is being recovered, Luffman said. “There is some at the pawn shop,” he said of the Mount Airy business involved, with that property now on hold.
Brittany King was being held in the Surry County Jail Wednesday afternoon under a total secured bond of $5,300. She is scheduled to appear in District Court on March 19.
