WINSTON-SALEM — The Surry Central Golden Eagles girls lost a tough match away on Friday to Winston-Salem Prep, but the coach said it was a hard fought battle.

The Phoenix rose over the Golden Eagles by a score of 62-59 in a very physical ball game, said Coach Mandy Holt.

Courtney Hegler led with 24 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Cassidy Joyner was the second highest scorer with 15 points and six assists. Sarah Bruce contributed nine points, Tess Dockery had six, and Brooke Lewis had two.

The difference in the game came down to 24 turnovers and the fact they made seven three-pointers, said Holt.

She said, “I was proud of how we played and we fought to the end.”

The coach said the Golden Eagles shot 51 percent in two-point field goals, 31 percent from the three-point line, and 73 percent from the foul line.

Holt said the team would know after a meeting today the tournament match-up for next week.
