MONROE — North Surry and Surry Central placed nine wrestlers in the state tournament next weekend.

The Greyhounds had six athletes make the top four, and Surry Central had three.

Central’s Wes Brown, who won the state 2A title at 220 pounds last year, won the heavyweight regional title Saturday night.

Teammate Nathon Bautista won the regional title at the opposite end of the scale, 106 pounds.

Both Brown and Bautista received a first-round bye, then won three straight matches for the title, according to Central Coach Stephen Priddy.

“Bautista looked really dominant,” the coach said. “He had a great tournament. They both did.”

In the finals, both wrestlers won on first-period pins.

At 120, Kevin Pack finished fourth, and the top four finishers move on to the Greensboro Coliseum next weekend.

At 106, the top four seeds advanced to the semifinals as expected. North Surry’s Saige Wolfe faced Bautista in the semis. Bautista won 9-0, but Priddy said Wolfe gave his guy a much tougher match than top seed Quayhigee Martin did in the final.

By making the top four, Wolfe also advanced to the state tourney.

West Stokes’ George Patrick won the 113 weight class over Juan Castro, Wilkes Central.

At 120, Priddy knew Pack would have a tough time winning as he had lost in the conference final to North Surry’s Austin McMillian.

This time around, it was Piedmont’s Brett Underwood that was Pack’s kryptonite. The junior won four matches but lost to Underwood in the quarterfinals and the consolation finals. Both were narrow decisions: 4-3 and 6-3.

McMillian pinned his first two opponents and dominated Thomasville’s Ahsan Butt 15-4 in the final.

At 126, North’s Tristen Brannock lost a 7-2 decision to Cody Walker, Cuthbertson, in the final. He advances to the state, along with Storm Long, Forbush, who finished fourth.

At 132, North’s Austin Rozier lost to eventual champion Joshua Hattaway, but then won his way up through the consolation brackets to take third place.

At 138, Wilkes Central’s Cole Susi knocked both Central’s Raymond Dance and North’s Caleb Lowe out of the consolation brackets to take third place. Lowe was just one win shy of making the top four.

Michael Elliott, Ashe County, won the 145 class, and Wilkes Central’s Parker Ward was third.

North’s Austin Collins continued to roll through opponents, beating Lucas Smith, Piedmont, in the final.

Collins and Smith have been ranked neck and neck all season on Retro Rankings. When they finally met, Collins pinned Smith in the second period. Dylan Adams, Wilkes Central, was third.

Lucas Miller, Ashe County, won the 170 class.

North’s Levi Slate fought through two tough decisions even before he reached the 182 final against unbeaten Parker VonEgidy. VonEgidy won on a technical fall in the third period.

Justin Scarborough, Ashe County, lost to Slate then went on to win the consolation bracket over Michael Wood, Starmount. Both advance with Slate to the state tourney.

Ashe’s William Miller won the 195 weight.

Central’s Bryant White came up one win shy of qualifying, losing a close decision to Dylan Edwards, Forbush, who finished fourth.

North’s Cody Slate also came up one win shy at 220 pounds.

Garrett Stokes, Starmount, pulled off a couple of upsets on his way to a second-place finish. Steve Byers, Wilkes Central, took third.

Brown won all three matches by pin at 285, including knocking North’s Austin Akers into the consolation brackets. Akers came up one win shy of placing. Kasain Tillman, Wilkes Central, was second.

Priddy said he was very proud of all the local athletes at the meet.

“Everybody wrestled hard,” he said. “They didn’t leave anything out there on the mat.”

One of the mantras Priddy has repeated to his squad is “when you leave, don’t have any regrets,” and he feels like these guys did just that.
