ELKIN — The 14th-seeded East Surry Cardinal varsity boys pulled an upset against Elkin, who holds the title of Mountain Valley Conference Champions and came into the playoffs as the third seed.
The Cards pulled out a 70-50 victory on the road and Tyler Pardue led the Cardinal scoring effort with 16 points followed by Scott Meredith with 15 and six assists. Drew Alley scored 13 with eight assists and Seth Brim had a double-double scoring 10 points with 11 rebounds. Carson Long had eight points, Eli Gilbert six, and Bryan Banks scored two.
Sam Lane for the Buckin’ Elks scored 13, Chris Hudspeth 12, and Jamiles Hayes had seven.
Head Coach Jason Anderson said the Cards team has gelled when they needed too. Anderson said the team played stingy defense against Elkin and made them work for every shot.
Anderson said the team forced the tempo early and jumped out in the first quarter with 21 points. The Buckin’ Elks only scored nine in the first quarter. The score at half-time was Cards up 40-25. In the third, the Cards had 54 points and the Elks had 38.
The Cards will play North Wilkes away on Wednesday.
