In a move that local animal advocates say “couldn’t have come at a better time,” the Petco Foundation has presented Mayberry4Paws a $500 grant that will be used to help control the unwanted pet population in the county.

The grant, announced last Thursday, will be used to help market the group’s spay/neuter programs in Surry County.

According to officials with Petco, Mayberry4Paws should receive the grant in the coming weeks.

Jane Taylor, one of the founders of the group, said the money will be used to relieve some of the burden on local volunteers.

“The Petco grant funds will cover the costs associated with Mayberry4Paws’ spay and neuter voucher programs,” she said. “The spay/neuter program has grown so much that it has become a financial hardship on our volunteers to keep paying for stamps, envelopes, copying, etc., from our personal funds.

“We appreciate Petco’s interest and confidence in our efforts, and are excited to have their support in maintaining Mayberry4Paws’ spay/neuter voucher program,” Taylor added.

The grant requires the local animal group to complete a follow-up report that details how the funds were used.

Paul Jolly, executive director of the Petco Foundation, said he hopes the funds will help in the local pet population control effort.

“We extend our best wishes to you for continued success, and look forward to hearing about the wonderful accomplishments you were able to accomplish together with this grant,” he said. “You make a real difference for animals.”
