HUNTERSVILLE — The Lady Cardinals ended their season Wednesday night falling to Lake Norman Charter Academy, 55-45, after being outscored in the second and third quarters.

Coach Keith Gunter said the girls were up 12-9 at the end of the first quarter, but “we had an awful second quarter.” Lake Norman outscored East Surry 15-4 in that second quarter.

Despite being outscored by just five points, 16-11, in the third quarter, the Cardinals couldn’t put enough points together in the final quarter to pull out a win. East Surry scored 18 to Lake Norman’s 15 in the fourth.

“They built a 15-point lead, and we fought back,” Gunter said. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 40-27. “We got after it a lot in the third and fourth quarters, we just couldn’t get anything to fall in the second.”

And one of the team’s leading scorers, Keri Fulp, who is headed to Wake Forest next year, has been fighting a stomach virus all week. “She gutted it out, but she wasn’t herself,” the coach noted.

“They played hard and very well and took it to us,” he said of Lake Norman’s girls.

Scorers for East Surry were Gabi Jessup with 13; Sydney Mosley 12; Keri Fulp 10; Sydney Marion six; and Kacie Markle four.
