A Mount Airy man is behind bars facing numerous violations related to alleged sexual assaults targeting children which began more than 10 years ago.

Kelly Lee Matthews, 40, of 410 W. Pine St., is charged with 22 counts of indecent liberties with a minor and 10 counts of first-degree sexual offense with a minor. All are felonies.

The charges relate to sexual assaults that were reported to have occurred between 2001 and 2006, involving two minor children who were about 5 to 7 years old during that time. “The two minors are kin to each other,” Capt. Alan Freeman of the Mount Airy Police Department said Thursday afternoon when the charges against Matthews were announced.

One of the two is a male and the other a female, Freeman said, without specifying their relationship. Due to the age of the pair, police said their names are not being released, although The Mount Airy News’ policy involves not identifying alleged victims of sexual offenses.

But Freeman added that Matthews was an acquaintance of the victims’ family at the time of the alleged sexual assaults, which police became aware of in recent months.

“Our investigation began last year,” he said.

Matthews is being held in the Surry County Detention Center under a $300,000 secured bond and will have his first appearance in court Monday, police said.

Amen knowthefactsfirst!!! How stupid the MA Police are going to look when they start to "really" investigate the sister of the minors and see that this is a case of stupidity!! I can't wait. And those kids, anyone can look at their Facebooks and know they aren't being looked after like they should. The sister is running men while Kelly is over in IRAQ fighting for his country. Makes me want to puke. It's a shame.

Crazy how many of you like to judge and don't know the entire story.

Just think about the case for a minute.

Why would the children wait so long to come forward and say that this happened to them?

Why didn't the children's guardian (sister) ever say anything in the last ten years?

Oh yeah that's right because it didn't happen. Plus he was overseas fighting for our freedom during most of this time frame.

Hopefully his attorney will do her job and get him out of this big mess, which all started with a crazy guardian not getting what she wants, so she gets her siblings to lie to the police to get Kelly out of the way.

I'll say the same thing again-- A year long investigation by MAPD found enough evidence against him to convince a magistrate that $300,000 was a sufficient bond in the case. Your arguments on here that "There ain't no way he coulda done this" is not going to convince me, or any judge/jury otherwise.

I cannot say that the man isn't nice, because I do not know him. What I do know is that there have been many people in our society today, who do a lot of good for their community, yet still manage to hide their demons i.e.- Scout leaders, youth ministers, priests, doctors/dentists, public educators, the list is far too long.

If he really is innocent, I pray the truth comes out. However, if he's guilty, I'm glad the truth came out.

I don't believe this for one second. Like it was said before if you know this man, there is no way this happened. I hope they figure out what really happened and lock her up for make false accusations towards him. And for the record I don't agree with anything involving hurting little children. Just know that this is b.s. Kelly would do anything for anybody at anytime, he's the time of guy that would give you his shirt off his own back so you could stay warm, not worrying about himself getting cold.

Some things may not be Kosher in this paper but they generally are right on target and not everybody is being set up. There are times when the crimes actually did occur and the ones to worry about are the victims in this case not the man charged with the crimes. People who pray on the young for the soul intent of molestation deserve what ever they get if they are found guilty. This man should have left those children alone and kept his hands to himself and he wouldn't be in this mess! It's sad that things like this do happen in all kinds of places and especially in a small town like Mt. Airy (MAYBERRY. These kinds of things really hurt the city's image of a nice small town to live in like the high standard it's held to because of The Andy Griffith Show and the tourism that comes into the town from that.

Anyone who know him and the story, knows this isn't true. I can't wait for the WHOLE story to come out!!!

Note to Undercoverangell919: If you have information that is going to be made public at some point anywhay, why not speak up and give Mr.Matthews the benefit of another point of view?

@undercoverangel919, please indulge us. If you're basing his innocence simply on the fact that you find him to be nice, remember all the priests who surprised their congregations through the same allegations of molestation. In all seriousness, if there is more to this story and you're not going to divulge the information, I'm going to assume that the prosecution and judge wouldn't have issued the warrants without compelling evidence against him.

It sounds like the prosecutor is leaving too much reasonable doubt. One defense attorney advertises "Unfortunately, there are people out there who use these types of accusations as weapons. They can be used to gain advantage in custody cases and are sometimes used to retaliate for nothing more than hurt feelings." See kurtzandblum.com

It is my opinion that all states need "Jessica's Law." From what I have read, there is no known therapy or medication that can stop this. Children sexual molestation is getting to be like an epidemic. We as adults, need to do more to protect our children.

Not everything is always "Kosher" as you read in this paper. Sometimes people are set up as in this case. Sometimes we "as adults" need to do more to protect people from being unjustly accused!!!

Jessica's Law was passed in NC in 2008. We have plenty of laws. There is, however, a real shortage of law enforcement, prosecutors, and judges who have the energy to use them to protect children from abuse, neglect, and endangerment. Watch this case slide thought the system and you will see what I mean. The charges are in place, but it will likely be plea bargained down to a misdemeanor or dismissed because the prosecutor didn't actually witness the events.
