Slate, Brown to compete in 2A state championship matches

GREENSBORO — The state wrestling championship continued Friday with the consolation rounds and semifinals for 2A, 3A and 4A at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Surry Central’s Nathon Bautista (106) moved on with a first-period pin Thursday, but fell in the second match to Matthew Insogna, South Iredell, 5-2.

North’s Saige Wolfe lost in a second-period fall. Wolfe and Bautista met each other on the mat in the consolation rounds, and Bautista pinned Wolfe in 4:42. He will face Michael Lowe, West Caldwell, today for a chance to move on toward the third-place match.

North Surry’s Austin McMillian advanced at 120 pounds with a second-period pin Thursday, and then won another round defeating David Niemitalo, Wheatmore, before falling to Alex Bray, Croatan, 5-1. He is still alive in the consolation rounds and will face the winner of Kenneth Tenhopen and Taylor Webster for a chance to move to the third-place match.

Central’s Kevin Pack lost in a technical fall 24-7 Thursday, and then lost in the first round of consolations to Craig Hyatt, Providence Grove, 6-1.

North’s Tristen Brannock (126) squeezed out a 6-4 decision Thursday, and then won again 6-5 against Jacob Houck, West Caldwell. He fell to Tyler Myers, Trinity, 3-0, but is still alive in consolations and will face the winner of the Jonte Parker-Nicouzi Mitchell match today for a chance to advance to the third-place match.

Tammate Austin Rozier was caught for a pin at 132 Thursday. He won the first match in the consolations, but then fell to Johnny Deveaugh, 9-6.

At 152, North’s Austin Collins won a 13-5 decision Thursday. He won the first match Friday 11-4, but then fell to Matteson Tate Correll, Topsail, 6-4. He is still alive in consolations and will meet the winner of John Bustle-Nathan Reitzel match for a chance at a third-place competition.

Teammate Levi Slate has advance to the state championship round following a first match 12-2 major decision at 182 Thursday, a 15-4 decision in the first Friday match and a pine of Justin Scarborough in 3:13. He will face Parker VonEgidy, Piedmont, today.

At 285, Central’s Wes Brown also has advanced to the championship round. In Thursday’s match, he pinned his opponent in the third period. Then Friday, he had a pin in 1:20 and won a decision 8-2 to advance. He will face Chaas Delgado, Trinity.
