The You’re Never Too Old To Be Fit program is a joint effort of the Surry County Senior Center and the city of Mount Airy Parks and Recreation Department aimed at helping seniors increase their level of health.

One does not have to look far to see unfit seniors in Surry County. Being unfit, especially for seniors, equates to a lower quality of life. It certainly is more enjoyable to be a happy and healthy senior doing interesting, productive, and fun activities than it is to have one’s life centered on being physically uncomfortable and going to doctor’s appointments and medical testing appointments and taking many and frequent medications.

Surry County has a number of facilities that seniors can use for fitness activities, indoor fitness centers, a variety of outdoor fitness and regular walking trails, and a multitude of other outdoor and indoor recreational activities that exercise one’s body and spirit.

Eating healthy is part of being fit also, and there are a number of programs in Surry County on the subject offered by the Senior Center, municipal and county parks and recreation departments, the Armfield Civic and Recreation Center, the Surry County Health and Nutrition Center, NC Extension Service Office of Surry County, and others.

Age is not a barrier to being fit. There are many examples of seniors in their 70s and 80s maintaining a high fitness standard through exercise and a health diet.
