Unregistered voters must either complete the process by that time in person at the Surry County Board of Elections in Dobson or do so by mail. Those who are registering by mail may have forms postmarked by 5 p.m. in order to take part in the Oct. 6 primary.
The county elections office is on the ground floor of the new courthouse in Dobson.
Registration forms can be downloaded from the Surry Board of Elections Web site by clicking on a Voter Information link and mailed to the board at P.O. Box 372, Dobson, NC 27017. The telephone number there is 401-8225.
As of Thursday afternoon, 6,619 people in the Mount Airy city limits were eligible to vote in the election involving Gene Clark, Deborah Cochran, Paul Eich and Teresa Lewis, according to Surry Elections Clerk Libby Tilley.
The two top vote-getters in the primary will advance to the general election in November, when the mayor’s race will be decided. The winner will take over late this year for Jack Loftis, who opted not to seek another term.
Early Voting Option
Unregistered voters wanting to make their choices for mayor will have a reprieve available if they fail to meet this afternoon’s deadline, through the one-stop, early voting option.
With that method, citizens can both register and vote at the same time by visiting an early voting site either in Mount Airy or Dobson. However, ballots can be cast only while the one-stop program is in effect and not on Election Day itself.
The early voting service will be available at the Board of Elections office in Dobson beginning next Thursday and continuing to Oct. 3.
Also, the “no-excuse” one-stop satellite voting program will operate in the conference room at the Mount Airy Public Library from Sept. 30 to Oct. 3.
The schedule for the Mount Airy location will coincide with the library hours, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1; 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 2; and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 3 (which is a Saturday). That site is acceptable to persons with disabilities.
In Dobson, one-stop voting will be offered, starting Thursday, from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3, from 8:15 a.m. to 1 p.m.
