HAYS — The East Surry girls basketball team tipped off the Communication for Education Shoot-Out with a 53-24 victory over the host team, North Wilkes, Monday.
Kelsey Long led the Cardinals’ charge with a game-high 17 points to go with four assists. Sabra Bryant and Chelsea Nichols scored 10 apiece, while Sarah Thompson grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Vikings were held to single digits in every quarter.
East Surry takes on West Wilkes at 5:30 p.m. tonight to finish tournament play.

The East Surry boys faced the same opponent as the girls, but their game concluded with the Cardinals on the losing end of a 55-51 decision.
The Cardinals fell behind, 16-6, after the first quarter, but battled back to within six points at halftime. The Cardinals kept chipping away from there and found themselves up 40-39 to begin the fourth quarter. With the score tied at 51 with six seconds remaining, the Vikings’ Storm Clonch put the home team up for good.
East Surry had a chance to respond when North Wilkes went with a full-court press on the inbounds play, but a pass deep down the court was picked off.
Andrew Hunter led the Cardinals with 15 points, followed by Ryan Johnson with 11 and Hunter Diamont with 10. The Vikings were paced by Timmy Johnson’s 19 and Clonch’s 16.
The Cardinals face West Wilkes today at 4 p.m.
