DOBSON — The Surry County Board of Education will meet at East Surry High School Monday at 5 p.m. for its February meeting.

Clark Goings, the newly-appointed board member, will be sworn in at the start of the meeting.

The board will then discuss for approval the plan of action for Accuplacer testing. Surry County Schools and Surry Community College are partnering to offer college placement testing to select juniors in the spring of 2010.

The calendar committee, after receiving approval for the regular calendar for the 2010-11 school year, will submit a draft of the calendar for the Surry Early College High School of Design for the 2010-11 school year.

Due to issues encountered with the use of Classcape, an online practice test system used by teachers for review, the 1:1 middle school handbook needs to be amended to allow students to use Mozilla as an additional Internet browser. Board members will be asked to approve that amendment.

North Surry High School’s JROTC will ask the board to approve a request to honor veterans on the Friday before Memorial Day. The cadets would like to renovate the flag pole area at the school as well as hold several special activities.

The board will hear a school construction update from Dr. Ashley Hinson, superintendent, and information on instruction matters from Pat Widdowson, assistant superintendent. Board members will also recognize a number of people for their achievements.
