The Mount Airy Police Department has released names of persons involved in a massive narcotics roundup that began on Wednesday.

At last report, all but 15 persons listed had been taken into custody as part of an investigation that was under way for about a year. It targeted sales of cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana and other controlled substances.

Police say that the operation, one of the largest in the area in years, should serve as a wake-up call to local citizens as to the magnitude of narcotics distribution locally — and put at least a small dent in those activities.

“I think it opens up the eyes of the community, letting them know that these people are from a young age of 18 to the oldest person we arrested yesterday at 67,” said Justin Wagoner, Mount Airy narcotics detective. Wagoner said citizens likely will be surprised by the involvement of some of those implicated.

Noting the volume of arrests, Wagoner added that it should show the community law enforcement is serious about the drug problem and encourage citizens to report other suspicious activity in the future. In terms of its impact on the overall problem, the narcotics detective termed it “not huge, simply for the fact there is so much out there.”

Wagoner added, “Going by stats, we only catch less than 10 percent.”

Regardless of the success rate in eradicating drugs, Police Chief Dale Watson said this week’s roundup shows city officers are willing to devote the resources needed to combat narcotics trafficking. He believes that the busts will make some impact while also sending a message that it will not be tolerated.

Watson said that given the magnitude of the operation, Mount Airy officers could not have mounted it without help from the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, Dobson Police Department and State Bureau of Investigation.

“If it hadn’t been for their assistance, we wouldn’t have been able to make the impact we did,” the police chief said.

Wagoner said that from Oct. 1 of 2009 through January, city officers seized nearly 50 grams of cocaine, 3.3 pounds of marijuana, about 275 dosage units of pills and 33.5 pounds of methamphetamine.

King was in a state correctional facility when the roundup began and was served with warrants on the charges.

n Charles Andrew “Drew” Valentine, 40, who has multiple addresses listed on Dutch Lane, Mount Airy, selling/delivering a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine), possession with intent to sell or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine) and felony conspiracy to sell/deliver a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine). Valentine was located and arrested.

n Homero Cabrera “Mario” Castillo, 35, 156 Simpson Road, Mount Airy, trafficking in methamphetamine by transporting and trafficking in methamphetamine by possession. Castillo was in Henderson County Detention Center during the roundup. His warrants will be sent to the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office for service.

n Johnny C. James, 21, 113 Dutch Lane, Mount Airy, two counts of selling/delivering a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine), two counts of possession with intent to sell or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine) and two felony conspiracy charges. James was not located during the initial roundup and was still at large at last report.

n Donnie Lee Livingston, 55, 467 W. Pine St. (Mittman’s Apartments), Mount Airy, selling/delivering a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine) and possession with intent to sell or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine). Livingston was not located and remained at large at last report.

n Otis William Green, 58, 467 W. Pine St. (Mittman's Apartments), Mount Airy, three counts of selling/delivering a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine), three counts of possession with intent to sell or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine) and two counts of felony conspiracy to sell/deliver a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine). Green was located, arrested and served.

n Kenneth Arnold Hinton, 67, 1212 Granite Road, Mount Airy, sell/deliver a counterfeit controlled substance. Hinton was located, arrested and served.

n Jeremy Tremain Hatcher, 21, 504 Worth St., Mount Airy, selling/delivering a Schedule VI controlled substance (marijuana) and possession with intent to sell or deliver a Schedule VI controlled substance (marijuana). Hatcher was not located and remained at large at last report.

n Anthony Seaton Meeks, 23, whose address is listed variously as 156 Edwards Drive, Mount Airy, and 755 Old Highway 601, selling/delivering a Schedule VI controlled substance (marijuana), possession with intent to sell or deliver a Schedule VI controlled substance (marijuana), maintaining a drug vehicle, felony conspiracy to sell/deliver, trafficking by possession, trafficking by delivery, trafficking by sale, trafficking by transport and felony conspiracy to traffic. Meeks was not located and remained at large at last report.

n Barry Donnell Shuff, 40, 360 Parker Road, Mount Airy, two counts of selling/delivering a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine), two counts of possession with intent to sell or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine), two counts of maintaining a drug dwelling and two counts of felony conspiracy to sell/deliver a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine). Shuff was located, arrested and served.

n Michael Gray Jessup, 53, Davis Apartments, West Pine Street, Mount Airy, selling/delivering a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine), possession with intent to sell or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine) and two counts of felony conspiracy to sell/deliver a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine). n Myra Denise Tate, 47, 113 Dutch Lane, Mount Airy, two counts of selling/delivering a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine), two counts of possession with intent to sell or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance, four counts of maintaining a drug dwelling and four counts of felony conspiracy. Tate was located, arrested and served.
