COLORADO SPRINGS, Col. — Surry Community College pitcher Brooke Honeycutt was selected by the National Junior College Athletic Association as the Division I Softball Pitcher of the Week for April 3 through 10.

Honeycutt is the first Surry softball player to ever receive the award.

“This is a tremendous honor for our softball program and the entire college,” Surry head softball coach Amber Reid said. “Everyone is extremely proud of Brooke’s performance this past week.”

A sophomore from East Surry High School, Honeycutt had an outstanding week in the circle for the Lady Knights.

On March 30, in a 3-0 win over Potomac State College (WV), Honeycutt went seven shutout innings, allowed only one hit with one walk to go along with 15 strikeouts.

On April 2, in a 3-2 win over Region X opponent Florence-Darlington Technical College (SC), Honeycutt went seven innings again, allowing only two earned runs off five hits while striking out five and walking two.

The next day, the right-hander picked up her third win of the week in a 7-3 victory over Region X foe Southeastern Community College in the annual “Swing for Life” game, which was established in remembrance of Honeycutt and sister Paige’s mother Ann, who died last spring after battle with leukemia.

“In a week that honors the memory of her mother, I could not be more proud of Brooke,” Reid said. “It’s also important to note that her sister Paige did an excellent job of catching Brooke during her outstanding week on the mound.”

Against Southeastern, Honeycutt went six innings giving up one earned run on four hits while recording 11 strikeouts and not allowing a walk.

For the entire week, Honeycutt notched a 3-0 record with a 1.11 earned run average while racking up a total of 30 strikeouts.

“For Brooke to be awarded such a prestigious national award during such an emotional week with the “Swing for Life” event is truly amazing,” Surry athletic director Mark Tucker said. “It’s a great honor that goes far beyond the game of softball. Both Brooke and Paige have played outstanding in a season that Coach Reid and the team dedicated in memory of their mother.”

The Lady Knights are 20-12 overall with Honeycutt leading the pitching staff with an 8-4 record and a 1.49 ERA.
