Mount Airy took revenge for a 4-1 loss at the hands of North Surry earlier this season with a 2-1 win over the Greyhounds on their senior night.

Mount Airy’s Panayiota Boutis booted in a beautiful shot from just outside the North Surry box halfway through the first half for a 1-0 lead.

Summer Hamilton added the Granite Bears second goal in the second half and put the pressure on North Surry.

The Greyhounds Megan Downing scored with just more than 20 minutes left to play but North could not find the net again as the Bears picked up their third win of the season.

Mount Airy controlled the ball for much of the game and kept North Surry on the defensive and in their own half of the pitch.

“I thought we were aggressive,” Mount Airy coach Andrew Howard said. “I think we spent most of the time in their end which was a lot better turnaround than the last time we played them. Our defense was strong and we communicated well. We worked the outsides well and we should have scored more than we did. We had a lot of opportunities to score which was good to see.”

East Surry comes through late

KERNERSVILLE — East Surry held off a late Bishop McGuinness run Tuesday on the way to a vital 8-7 Northwest 1A/2A Conference victory.

The win puts the Cardinals in a tie with Bishop for the top 1A spot in the conference and for third place overall.

“It was a huge win because we are trying to work towards getting the top 1A seed for the upcoming playoffs and going into tonight Bishop was ahead of us,” East Surry coach Barry Hall said. “We felt like if we could win that would give us a chance of making a run for the number one seed if we can pull out the final games in the next week and half.”

Up 8-2 in the bottom of the sixth, East Surry went into a dive, with control issues allowing Bishop to put across four runs and pull within a pair of runs at 8-6.

The Villains scored one more in the bottom of the seventh, but the Cardinals were able to escape when Bishop’s Brandon Gray hit a screaming line drive directly to second baseman Kyle Shinault for the game’s final out and Villains runners on first and second.

East Surry won without the help of one of its better all-around players, junior center fielder Andrew Hunter, who was diagnosed with mononucleosis Monday and is out indefinitely.

Hunter leads the Cardinals in stolen bases, RBIs and is second on the team in batting average.

Hall said his team rose to the challenge in the absence of an offensive catalyst like Hunter, and specifically pointed to the play of Chris Hardy, who entered the starting lineup in place of Hunter.

“The kids stepped up today,” Hall said. “Chris Hardy had a big game for us and stepped in to play right field for us and was good at the plate. Across the board we had kids step up. When one of your best players is out that’s tough, especially when you are playing a quality team like Bishop McGuinness.”

Hardy was 2-for-3 with three runs, while Austin Tilley finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Troy Jessup, who also got his third win of the season on the mound, was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

East Surry improves to 16-4 overall and 7-4 in conference play. They will host North Stokes Friday.

Surry Central pounds North

DOBSON — Austin McLamb provided support both on the mound and at the plate Tuesday night in Surry Central’s 10-1 victory over North Surry.

McLamb allowed only one run with 11 strikeouts. He also went 2-3 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored.

His breaking balls were keeping North Surry’s batters tied up, and his fast balls were in places just out of reach.

Surry Central capitalized on its 11 hits and North Surry’s six errors to keep building up the lead on the Greyhounds.

Matt Scott said the rainy weather had an effect on the North Surry defense.

“The field was wet, and we were putting the ball on the ground,” he said. “There were some balls that slipped away, and scooted under their legs or whatever.”

Scott said he was proud of the way his players put the ball on the ground instead of popping them up or striking out.

The Golden Eagles didn’t have to deal with the wet field as much with the 11 strikeouts from McLamb.

The Eagles didn’t make one error on the ten outs they had to field.

Surry Central came out strong with three runs in the first, then really put the game away with five in the forth.

The Eagles used bunts and stolen bases well, which was something new for the team that usually just waits on the big double or triple.

“We were just trying to get some action going,” Scott said. “I think we’re better when we’re aggressive like that.”

Andrew Lammon had a good game at the plate, going 2-2 with one run scored.

Surry Central will play today at Starmount, and Friday at West Stokes.
