William Jerry Lee of Mount Airy suffered gunshot wounds to a hand and upper leg about 4 p.m. Friday while with two other men on Hawks Road near a fishing area off Epworth Church Road, according to Carroll County Sheriff Warren Manning.
While the shooting originally was thought to be hunting-related, “it was just three guys together at a lake down there,” Manning said.
The victim, whom Manning said is in his early 50s, is believed to have been wounded with a handgun, based on the results of a preliminary investigation.
The sheriff added that the shooting appears to have been an accident.
“Right now, we’re still investigating it,” Manning said Friday night. “We’re investigating to make sure it was accidental.”
Lee, whose address in Mount Airy was not available, was taken by helicopter ambulance to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, the sheriff said.
A hospital spokesman said at 9 p.m. Friday that Lee was still being treated in the Emergency Department at the facility and his condition was unavailable.
