DOBSON — No injuries were reported, but several county elementary school children had a bit of a scare at the end of school yesterday as their bus was involved in a fender-bender.
According to officials on the scene, bus number 160 was leaving Rockford Elementary School carrying 31 students shortly after the 3 p.m. close of school yesterday when it was involved in the accident.
Assistant Superintendent Charles Graham said the bus was attempting to turn onto Rockford Road from the school parking lot when it pulled into the path of a passenger vehicle operated by 18-year-old Marlaine Sueann Floyd.
“Traffic was backed up with people trying to pick up children and the driver of the bus couldn’t see around the turning vehicles,” he said.
State Police Officer E.V. Tate said the bus was operated by 60-year-old Carol Ann Beacher.
Beacher was charged with failure to yield the right of way, according to Tate.
Graham said he is just happy there weren’t any injuries.
“The safety of our children in paramount to everyone in the Surry County School system,” he said. “We want them safe whether at school or on the way to or from school.”
