MOUNT AIRY — Mrs. Patricia Ann Matthews “Cricket” Hester, 80, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. She was born in Surry County on May 15, 1932, to the late Roy and Betty Jane Thomas Matthews. Mrs. Hester retired from Smart Top Hosiery. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed. Mrs. Hester is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Libby and Van Combs, Patsy Baskin and Devona Shumate, all of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Wanda Matthews of Granite Falls; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eva Martin of Columbia, S.C., and Alma Callahan of Mount Airy; a brother, Charlie Matthews of Mount Airy; and a special friend, Truman Johnson of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hester was preceded in death by her husband, Avery Thomas Hester; a sister, Marydell Taylor; and a brother, Luke Matthews. The family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at 225 Shamrock Ave., Mount Airy. A private memorial service will be held at a later time.
