DOBSON — The Lady Eagles turned an 8-6 game into a blowout with North Stokes, winning 68-30.

Surry Central outscored the Lady Vikings 37-5 over a 14-minute stretch from the end of the first quarter to the 4:52 mark of the third quarter.

The Eagle defense gave up less than five points per quarter for the first three periods and the Eagles led 50-14 at the end of the third. With frequent subbing and less full-court pressure, the Eagles allowed the Vikings to put up 16 points in the fourth to make the score more presentable.

The first quarter featured a healthy dose of center Brittany Lewis, celebrating her 18th birthday that came on Monday.

She scored eight points in the first. When she hit a free throw with 4:23 left in the first half, Lewis had outscored the Vikings by herself 12-11.

Lewis added a bucket in the second half to finish with 14, one of three Eagles in double figures.

Sarah Bruce led the team with 16 points, and Courtney Hegler added 12. Marlee Wilmoth came off the bench to score eight, Tess Dockery six, Cassidy Joyner four, Kristin Key and Kendra Johnson three each, and Brooke Lewis two.

“I know it sounds crazy when they only had 11 points, but the halftime message was all on defense,” said Coach Mandy Holt. She thought the team could do an even better job. The Eagles held the Vikings to just one three-point play for the third quarter.

“Joyner didn’t score much,” said Holt, but “she had a good floor game overall.” The junior guard had three steals and three boards. She made seven assists with just one turnover.

Hegler led the team with eight rebounds and eight assists as well as four steals and two blocks.

Brittany Lewis had six boards and sister Brooke had four. Bruce also had four boards, while Dockery had four steals.

Surry Central travels to South Stokes to take on an improving Lady Sauras team Friday.
