DOBSON — A 15-year-old county girl is back home with her family after going missing from the Surry Early College High School, located on the campus of Surry Community College, officials confirmed Thursday night.

While they aren’t releasing many details, college spokesman Marion Venable confirmed that the incident was not an abduction, but she would not say whether an adult was involved in the incident.

“If this were an adult, the situation would be much different,” she said. “But because it involves a minor we can’t comment.”

Venable said the incident began Tuesday.

“We were alerted at about 6 p.m., that a student was missing, and people came together from across the campus and were joined by regional and state authorities,” she said. “College, public school and local law enforcement worked through the night Tuesday.”

According to Venable, the multi-jurisdictional investigation that included law enforcement and school personnel was instrumental in the positive outcome.

“We continued throughout the night and until the teen was discovered to work with those agencies, and through their efforts investigating the situation, leads were developed and one of our sister law enforcement agencies was able to resolve the incident,” she said.

Venable said the teen was reunited with her mother Wednesday afternoon after being returned from Guilford County.

“We were so relieved with the outcome,” Venable said. “I think we’ve all heard and been exposed to horrific scenarios through the media, so we were overjoyed that our worst fears weren’t realized.

“She is safe, and has been returned to her family,” Venable said. “Our local campus police performed admirably and in such a situation we couldn’t have been in better hands.”

The investigation is continuing, and no charges have been filed, according to the college spokesman.
