Time is running out for nominations to be made for the 2013 class of the Greater Mount Airy Sports Hall of Fame.

Nomination forms must be turned in by the close of business today or, if mailed, bear a postmark of Jan. 31.

Forms can be obtained at Reeves Community Center and the Municipal Building, or online at www.mountairy.org.

The nomination process is open to athletes of the past as well as past coaches, administrators, referees, umpires or other officials in a sports program, or who are still active but have served in one of those capacities at least 25 years. Allowing the still-active participants to be inducted reflects a rules change implemented for this year’s class.

Mount Airy’s Sports Hall of Fame was launched in 2003 and up to four people are added each year.

A committee who inducts them also may select one person annually for the Granite City Award. That individual is chosen on the basis of his or her contributions to the promotion of sports in the defined area other than as an athlete, coach or administrator.

Catrina Alexander, the city’s parks and recreation director, said Wednesday that in addition to new nominations for the 2013 induction, persons suggested in the past who weren’t selected will be considered.

Additional information regarding the past nominees can be submitted as part of this year’s process, but must conform to the deadline.

The inductees will be honored during an outdoor ceremony on April 14 and have their names added to a monument located near the Municipal Building.
