Mrs. Brenda Gail Riggs Thomas, 54, of 508 Maple Hollow Road, Mount Airy, passed away Friday morning, February 8, 2013, at her home. Mrs. Thomas was born December 9, 1958, in Surry County, the daughter of Dorothy Johnson Riggs and the late Bobby Lee Riggs. Brenda was a graduate of North Surry High School. She was gifted as a teaching assistant and shared her love with all the children who came under her care at Copeland Elementary School. Mrs. Thomas was a devoted Christian and a longtime member of Community Baptist Church. Brenda was a devout sports enthusiast with White Plains Raiders Football, White Plains Pirates Baseball, North Surry Greyhounds, and the UNC Tarheels. She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Ricky Lee Thomas of the home; three sons, Matthew Thomas of Mount Airy, and Jacob Thomas and Caleb Thomas, both of the home; two granddaughters, Emmory Claire Thomas and Anslee Kate Thomas, both of Mount Airy; her mother, Dorothy Johnson Riggs of Mount Airy; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jan and Johnny Carpenter and Vickie and Tim Wilson, all of Mount Airy. The funeral service will be held Monday, February 11, 2013, at 2:00 PM at Community Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Jessup and the Rev. Sammy Lawson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service.
