East’s Tunstall shines at state swim meet

CARY — East Surry’s Kelsey Tunstall cracked the top 10 in three races at the state championship swim meet here Saturday.

Tunstall placed fourth in the 200-yard individual medley and seventh in the 500-yard freestyle at the state 1A/2A championship held in the Triangle Aquatic Center.

Tunstall also teamed up with Mikayla Elliott, Katherine Martin and Avery Tilley to finish eighth in the 200 freestyle relay.

In that same race, Bishop McGuinness finished 18th and Mount Airy 20th. The Lady Bears competing were Ivy Marion, Sydney Peavy, Lizzie Pell and Micaela Tumbarello.

Marion, Peavy and Tumbarello also joined with Emma Harrison to finish 16th in the 200 medley relay.

Harrison later finished 12th in the 100 backstroke.

Three locals raced in the girls 100 butterfly. Surry Central’s Christine Hawks finished 11th. East Surry’s Martin was 18th, and Central’s Katelyn Southard was 21st.

On the boys side, two local swimmers competed in the same event.

North Surry’s Payden Simmons was 16th in the 100 breaststroke, and East’s Christopher Holshouser was 24th.
