WINSTON-SALEM — Surry Central was knocked from the Northwest Conference Tournament by a determined Phoenix squad that sizzled the nets 95-40.

The Golden Eagles came in as the eighth seed against top-seeded Winston-Salem Prep, a team they played just last Friday.

In Friday’s game, the Eagles played evenly with the Phoenix for three quarters, but were outscored by 12 in one quarter.

In the rematch, the Eagles never stood a chance as Prep posted a season high with 95 points.

Prep shot a stellar 38-56 from the field (67.9 percent). Of their 18 misses, the Phoenix grabbed 10 offensive rebounds.

Prep shot 29-39 on two-point shots (74.4 percent) and 9-17 from long range (52.9 percent).

In Friday’s game, Central was able to control the tempo for the most part, except for a couple of runs, noted assistant coach Jeff Edmonds. In this game, however, Prep never let its foot off the gas pedal.

The team has the best two-guard in the league (Mike Hughes), the top three-point shooter in Aaron Lipscomb and arguably the best point guard in Raekwon Harney, said Edmonds. Throw in 6-foot-8 Coye Simmons, and the Phoenix can hurt a team in many ways.

Central tried forcing Omar Roseboro to do the scoring, and he responded with three three-pointers and 11 total points.

The Eagles tried moving Simmons away from the basket, and he started making 8- and 10-footers.

Simmons finished with a team-high 19 points, and Harney and Hughes scored 14 each.

For Central, Simeon Bracken led with 13 points and four rebounds. Zach Wilmoth had 11 points, three rebounds and a steal.

Jake Wilmoth had eight points and two rebounds. Kenyon Martin scored three, Luke Haymore and Cole Stewart two each and Brett Mosley one.

Point guard Kirk Needham didn’t score, but tallied four assists and a steal.

Prep advances to face Bishop McGuinness Wednesday night at North Surry after the girls’ semifinal game.
