To the Editor,

‘Sequester Squirm’ The government is trying to squirm out of the “sequestration” deal they signed, so they can keep over-spending our money.

Harry Reid and the rest of the democratic Congress agreed in 2011 to the sequestration of $1.2 trillion in spending cuts in order to get the debt ceiling raised. Well, the debt ceiling was raised but now they do not want to follow through on the budget cuts they agreed to. We are facing the raising of the debt ceiling again this year but Congress has not stuck to their agreement for spending cuts from the last raising of the debt ceiling.

This cannot continue. I urge you to call or write your Congressman and tell them to stick with the sequester deal and cut out of control spending now.

Senator Barry Goldwater offered the following in 1994: “I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue."

"Why, the beauty of the very system we Republicans are pledged to restore and revitalize — the beauty of this Federal system of ours — is in its reconciliation of diversity with unity."

"We must not see malice in honest differences of opinion, and no matter how great, so long as they are not inconsistent with the pledges we have given to each other in and through our Constitution."

"Our Republican cause is not to level out the world or make its people conform in computer regimented sameness. Our Republican cause is to free our people and light the way for liberty throughout the world."

"Ours is a very human cause for very humane goals.”

Unfortuantely, his first paragraph was used to paint him as an extremist wing-nut and he lost his bid for the presidency by a landslide even though his public service record was that of a mostly-moderate public servant. The rest of his speech is actually a really good lesson for us during these polarized times. The bottom line is that today's extreme right wingers AND today's extreme left wingers are ultimately fighting a losing battle because most of us are a lot closer to the middle than those who yell the loudest.

Our country is facing internal fiscal threats that put our children's future at risk. Wouldn't it be great if we could come together and elect rational legislators who could compromise positions without compromising principles and start actually solving problems. Those on the extremes may enjoy a few feel-good moments electing folks who swear allegiance to those who elect them; unfortunately that will not produce solutions to our current problems, because the vast majority of our citizenry is not particularly extreme in either direction.

Sooner or later, we will come to the realization that it is our country's best interests to elect and support rational and moderate human beings to work collaboratively toward regaining the financial footing that escapes us right now.

The Sequester was the white houses idea and the senate has not voted on a budget in over 3 yrs, except the one obama put out which did not get one vote from either side. Yet obama keeps blaming the right.

When will the people see his is lying to us over and over?

Every yr we give China millions in "aid" but they never cut that or talk about the billions we give all the countrys who hate us.

Do not get me started on the Jets we are giving the muslim brotherhood...

Thank you so much for bringing this to the front of the line and light for citizens to see what really happens in Washington. I like you am sick and tired of these minions that actually work for us spending money like there is no tomorrow. Kay Hagan is so out of touch with the citizens. She needs to be voted out of office in 2014. I write her on serious issues and she most allways sends back a form letter and votes her way and not what N.C. Voters want. She votes for anything Obama suggest. Hagen sends me her News Letters and ask me to call Republicans in the House to vote for Womens protection and her friends like in Colorado unarm Women and tell them to unrinate or vomit on and attacker. Well, can anyone do that on command? Women are more accurate with firearms than men. It's a proven fact at the ranges. Arm them and let them protect themselves. It's the best way for Womens Protection. Thank you Paula
