GREENSBORO — The state wrestling championship kicked off Thursday night with the opening round for 2A, 3A and 4A at the Greensboro Coliseum.

North Surry and Surry Central took part in the matches Thursday, while East Surry and Mount Airy will open the 1A brackets at 2 p.m. today.

Central’s Nathon Bautista (106) moved on with a first-period pin. North’s Saige Wolfe lost in a second-period fall.

North Surry’s Austin McMillian advanced at 120 pounds with a second-period pin. Central’s Kevin Pack lost in a technical fall 24-7.

North’s Tristen Brannock (126) squeezed out a 6-4 decision, but teammate Austin Rozier was caught for a pin at 132.

At 152, North’s Austin Collins won a 13-5 decision. Teammate Levi Slate won a 12-2 major decision at 182.

At 285, Central’s Wes Brown pinned his opponent in the third period.

Bautista, McMillian, Brannock, Collins, Slate and Brown all advanced to the quarterfinal round.

Wolfe, Pack and Rozier are still alive in the consolation rounds where they could advance as far as third place if they win out.

The consolation rounds and the quarterfinals start this morning at 9 a.m.

The semifinals are set for 6 p.m.

1A Tournament

On the 1A side, only eight participants compete in each weight class. Here are the matchups for wrestlers from the Northwest Conference. The 1A side begins at 2 p.m.

At 106 pounds, East Surry’s Eddie Nunez takes on South Stanly’s Cody Shields. If he wins, Nunez will advance to the semifinals to face the winner of Jose Aguilar, North Wilkes, and Simon Connolly, North Rowan.

At 113, East Surry’s Timmy Norman faces James Dagget, Chatham Central. The winner faces the winner of Lucas Smoot, North Wilkes, and Josh Thomas, Dixon.

At 126, Bishop McGuinness’ Alexander Preudhomme faces Deonte Whitfield, Southwest Onslow. The winner faces either Jake St. Germain, West Wilkes, or Teva Smith, Dixon.

At 138, Mount Airy’s Shay Wilson takes on Henry Seiler, N.C. School of Science and Math. The winner faces either Sean Webb, Swain County, or Lance Armenta, Southwest Onslow.

On the other side of the bracket, Nicholas Trego, Bishop, faces Kevin Anderson, Lejeune. And, Dustin Huffman, West Wilkes, faces Desshion Cooper, Ayden-Grifton.

At 145, East Surry’s Jimmy Speer faces Chad Hoff, Pamlico County. Mount Airy’s Triston Mabry goes against Jacob Farmer, Southwest Onslow. If they both win, Speer and Mabry could meet up once again in the semifinals.

At 160, South Stokes’ T.J. Whaley faces Zach Winegardner, Southwest Onslow.

At 170, Bishop’s Frank LaDew takes on Jorge Martinez, Ayden-Grifton.

At 195, Mount Airy’s Zaqwan Dobson faces Tyler Hudson, Dixon. The winner would face the winner of Zack Faircloth, East Wilkes, and Curtis Jones, Ayden-Grifton.

On the other side of the bracket, East Surry’s Cody Gaskill faces Humberton Mendoza, Pamlico County.

At 220, Mount Airy’s Mason Timmerman takes on Todd Cogar, East Carteret.

If he wins, Timmerman would face either Alleghany’s Taylor Nester or Chris Alex Lopez, Ayden-Grifton.
