DOBSON — One boy and one girl will have the chance to learn basketball skills from college coaches this summer in an annual scholarship competition.

The deadline is March 30 for local middle school students to apply for an all-expense-paid scholarship. One boy will be selected to attend the Roy Williams Basketball Camp June 15-19 at UNC-Chapel Hill, and one girl will go to the Kellie Harper Women’s Basketball Academy Aug. 1-4 at N.C. State University.

At camp, students will work directly with the players and coaches to learn basketball skills and about leadership and teamwork. Williams, a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and College Basketball Hall of Fame, has led the North Carolina Tar Heels to two NCAA championships and two ACC tournament crowns. Coach Kellie Harper is in her fourth season with the Wolfpack women and boasts six postseason appearances during her eight years as a head coach.

The scholarship covers the cost of the camp and room and board for the week. The family only has to provide transportation to and from the facilities.

To apply, students must be in the sixth, seventh or eighth grade during the 2013-2014 school year. Applicants must have permission from a parent or guardian to attend the overnight camp.

The children will be judged on academics, extracurricular activities and an essay. Winners will be announced by mid-April. Surry-Yadkin EMC is awarding the camp packages.
