MOUNT AIRY — Mrs. Roxie Thompson Hayes, 94, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013. She was born in Surry County on May 21, 1918, to the late Millard and Mallie Mathis Thompson. Mrs. Hayes was prcceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Acus J. Hayes of Surry County. She is survived by three children, Helen H. Dosier and her husband, Exton G. Dosier, of Sparta, Foster L. Hayes and his wife, Jan R. Hayes, of Denton and J. Carl Hayes and his wife, Lillar G. Hayes, Lowgap; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and special friends, Wanda Dillard, and daughter, Angel Dillard. She is survived by three sisters, Maxine Davis, Lucille Woods and Faye McCleary; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters, Ralph Thompson, Walter Thompson, Roger Thompson, James Thompson, Josephine Bell, Arline Potter, Blanche Forrester, Dorothy Matthews and infant sister, Aline Thompson. After retiring from Spencer’s Incorporated, she was an avid gardner, seamstress and a lifelong member and the oldest member of Ladonia Baptist Church. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, from noon to 2 p.m. at Ladonia Baptist Church followed by a service celebrating her life and burial in the Ladonia Baptist Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Gideons International, the National Cancer Society and/or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care of Surry County.
