CLAUDVILLE, Va. — William Stuart “Winkey” Martin, 68, of Claudville, died peacefully at his home, surrounded by family and friends on April 30, 2012. Mr. Martin was born in Patrick County on Feb. 11, 1944, to the late Everette P. and Nannie King Martin. He worked at J.P. Stevens for most of his life. He served in the army during the Vietnam War and earned two Bronze Service Stars, Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Sharpshooter and Marksman Medals. Mr. Martin was a dedicated member and deacon at Slate Mountain Baptist Church in Mount Airy. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 46 years, Alice Hill Martin; and a brother, Everett Lee Martin. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and Garry Brown of Stuart; a son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Cher Martin of Stuart; and four grandchildren, Tucker and Parker Brown and Bailey and Madison Martin. Also surviving are a brother, Dennis Martin of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Felix and Carole Martin of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a sister-in-law, June Martin of Ararat; and a special friend, Kathleen Frye of Westfield, N.C. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at 6 p.m. at Slate Mountain Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care at 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Slate Mountain Baptist Church at 3644 E. Pine St., Mount Airy, NC 27030.
