CHILTON

MOUNT AIRY — Mr. Ernest Walter Chilton Jr. was born on Sept. 20, 1930, in Surry County to Ernest Walter Chilton Sr. and Pearl Hutchens Chilton. He graduated White Plains High School in 1949, going on to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning to the States, Walter completed a Bachelor of Science at High Point College, now called High Point University. After 35 years of dedicated work, Walter retired from Gay and Taylor as an insurance claims representative; he went on to help form an insurance company, Edward R. Russell and Associates, located in Greensboro. From 1987-1990, Walter was a member of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County’s Insurance Advisor Committee. Walter was a civic-minded person, holding a membership in many local organizations, such as: Mount Airy J.C.s, Mount Airy Lions, Winston-Salem Lions, and Mount Airy Elks. While in good health, he was a faithful member of White Plains Friends Meeting and served the congregation through participation in multiple committees. In his later years, he enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. Walter was a very family centered man, he enjoyed keeping track of his kids and grandkids and spoke with them often. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Peggy Chilton; his three kids, Mike Chilton, his wife Janet, Karen Hutchens, and Charles Chilton, and his wife Sandy; and his three grandkids, Courtney, Katie and Ben. The service will be held at Moody Funeral Home Chapel Saturday at 2 p.m. The family will begin receiving friends at 12:30 p.m. The family wishes to express its appreciation to Central Continuing Care and Mountain Valley Hospice, for all of their loving care and support. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or White Plains Friends, 849 Old Hwy 601, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
