MOUNT AIRY — Mr. William Worth Haynes Sr., 89 of Mount Airy, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Ridgecrest Retirement. Mr. Haynes was born in Surry County on Aug. 9, 1923, to Charles Rufus and Shirley Coleman Haynes. He proudly served our county in the United States Army during WWII in the Rome-Arno, Northern Apennines. He earned the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and the Eamet Campaign Medal with three bronze service medals. Mr. Haynes graciously gave many hours to his fellow comrades as a dedicated member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Mt. Airy Post #2019. He was one of the founding members of the Franklin Volunteer Fire Department and devoted countless hours to the Boy Scouts of America who presented him with the prestigious honor of the “Golden Beaver Award.” He dearly loved his church and was a faithful member of Fancy Gap Baptist Church from the age of five. He served as deacon as well as many other capacities there. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and James Fant of King; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Donna Haynes of Mount Airy; grandchildren, Hope Tesh Lung and husband Matthew, John J. Tesh and wife Angela, Blake Haynes, Sarah Ayers and husband Jon; Frankie Fant and wife Audrey and James Fant Jr. and wife Elizabeth; great-grandchildren, Ansley Tesh, Elizabeth, Abby and Meghan Lung and Eli Ayers; a sister, Frances Williams of Roanoke, Va.; a brother-in-law, Max Gardner of Mt. Airy; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Haynes was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Gardner and a brother, Conrad Haynes. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, March 11, 2013, at Fancy Gap Baptist Church by Rev. Dwight Sechrist. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens with full military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post #2019 and Pilot Mountain Post #9436. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home Sunday night from 6 to 8.
