MOUNT AIRY — Mr. Alvis Lemuel McAlexander, 90, of Mount Airy passed away Friday, March 15, 2013, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born on July 24, 1922, in Elamsville, Va., to the late Zera C. and Martha Elizabeth “Daisy” Hall McAlexander. Mr. McAlexander retired from Pike Electric. He was a dedicated member of Flat Rock Presbyterian Church and had served as deacon, elder and clerk of the session. He was a veteran of WWII and past commander of VFW Post #2019. He was a PGM of the Renfro Masonic Lodge and also served as PDDGM. He was one of the founding members and the first chief of the Bannertown Fire Department. During his 50-year association with the department, he served many years on the board of directors. He is survived by his wife, Shelva Williams McAlexander of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dwight and Wanda McAlexander of Mount Airy, John and Cyndi McAlexander of Montclair, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Nancy McAlexander of Midlothian, Va.; grandchildren and spouses, Heather and Patrick Williams of Richmond, Va., and M. Allen McAlexander and wife Roxane of Havertown, Pa.; great-grandchildren, Henry Williams of Richmond, Va., Madelyn McAlexander and Grace McAlexander, both of Havertown, Pa.; also surviving are stepchildren, Darrell and Susan Goad and Karen Foley, all of Stuart, Va.; stepgrandchildren, Jacob Goad of Stuart, Va., and Lucian Goad and wife Tammara of Woolwine, Va.; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Lucian, Connor and Bristol Goad of Woolwine. Other survivors are brothers, Calvin, Cleo and Douglas McAlexander; and sisters, Luetta Harris and Gladys Roberts, all of Virginia. As well as his parents, Mr. McAlexander was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Goldie Goad McAlexander; and a son, Gary McAlexander. Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 17, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wilborn Rives officiating. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens with full military honors conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post #2019 of Mount Airy and Post #9436 of Pilot Mountain and full Masonic rites conducted by Renfro Masonic Lodge #691-AF & AM. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1 p.m. until time for the service at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
