STUART, Va. — An Ararat man has been arrested on a rape charge by the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office.
Maurice Chevelle Carter, 51, of 3339 Unity Church Road, was taken into custody Monday. That day is listed as the offense date.
Carter is charged with rape by force, threat or intimidation, which is a felony.
Patrick Sheriff Dan Smith said Tuesday that the alleged crime occurred in the Ararat area and involved an adult female.
He declined to provide further details, citing a need to protect the privacy of that individual and the sensitive nature of the case.
Carter is being held without privilege of bond in the Patrick County Jail at Stuart.
The sheriff explained that under Virginia law, bond is not allowed for defendants who are charged with rape by force, threat or intimidation.
A hearing for Carter is set for Sept. 13 in Patrick County General District Court.
The charge against the Ararat man carries a potential sentence of life in prison.
