Fifty-one students were inducted into Sigma Alpha Pi, Surry Community College’s chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success recently, where members received their pins and honor cords.

SCC President Dr. David Shockley urged the group to be leaders not only in school, but in their homes and communities as well. He also noted that an exemplary leader is often not one with a special title, but instead someone doing a great deal behind the scenes.

When the society was formed in the fall of 2013, about 200 SCC students joined the association and started working toward becoming full-fledge members. Members must complete leadership training by participating in several society activities including orientation, leadership training day, three speaker broadcast events, and three success networking team meetings. Members must have a 3.0 GPA and have completed 12 credit hours. Inductees also received a certificate, T-shirt, and auto decal.

“The core philosophy of the society is that anyone can achieve their dreams with proper support and dedicated action,” explains Tony Searcy, SCC’s Director of Campus Life and Student Support, who was pivotal in starting the local chapter. “These are the future leaders and shakers in the communities where they live. These inducted members now have access to a host of benefits such as coaches who will encourage and motivate them along with helping with online job interview skills and writing recommendations for them. Members also get discounts at various businesses. The students who transfer to four-year schools will automatically be members of that school’s chapter.”

Searcy is the club’s advisor, and Donald Fowler, Assistant Director of the Academic Support Center at Surry Community College, is the co-advisor. Inductees are lifetime members of Sigma Alpha Pi.

The inductees are listed along with their city of residency: Samantha Abbas, Savannah Collins, Jimmy Flynn, Erika Gutierrez, Erin Hooker, Veronica Sonato Montero, and Maria Avilene Villicana of Dobson; Cody Ashburn, Seth Brim, Spencer Flinchum, Nathan Goins, Devin Davis, Matthew Hall, Isaiah Johnson, Emily Linville, Austin Simmons, and Caroline Willard of Pilot Mountain; Damon Badgett, Alisha Billings, Matthew Cassell, Kelsey Cave, Christina Conzone, Brooklynn Dulaney, Robert Easter, David Holt, Steve Ingram, Kendra Inman, Abigail Rodriguez, Haley Spurlin, Whitney Walsh, Karen Whitaker, and Kameron Winesett of Mount Airy; Ashley Blackburn of North Wilkesboro; Robert Bost of Thurmond; Jennifer Fansler of Pinnacle; Kristi Ashworth and Tatum Gallagher of King; Lyndsi Hamlin and Megan Moon of Lowgap; Laken Haynes of Hamptonville; Madaline Jones and Jamie Stanley Jr. of East Bend; Christopher Lane of Siloam; Ericka Mason of Yadkinville; Garrett Matthews, Morgan Minton, Robbin Wagoner, and Zachary Wilcox of Jonesville; Maria Rojas Laja of Elkin; Sabrina Wiles of Winston Salem; and Katherine Gordon of Ararat.

Eleven members performed extra service in Sigma Alpha Pi and received a National Engaged Leader Award along with qualifying for additional scholarships and discounts with various companies.

Students who received the National Engaged Leader Award are: Alisha Billings, Ashley Blackburn, Brooklynn Dulaney, Robert Easter, Erin Hooker, Kendra Inman, Madaline Jones, Garrett Matthews, Jamie Stanley Jr., Whitney Walsh, and Sabrina Wiles.

The National Society of Leadership and Success was founded in 2001 to build leaders who make a better world. As of today, the National Society of Leadership and Success provides these stellar attributes to over 500 active college chapters nationwide and to more than 500,000 members, who embody the mission and serve as a powerful force of good in the greater community by encouraging and organizing action to better the world.
