PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry’s volleyball team hasn’t let up since the Lady Cardinals grabbed a share of the lead in the Northwest Conference last week.
East extended its winning streak to seven matches and improved to 14-3 overall on Thursday evening by smashing Walkertown in straight sets. The Lady Cardinals, who are now 6-1 in Northwest 1A Conference play and in the MaxPreps.com 1A top 10 for the first time this season, have lost just one set during their winning streak.
The team also played on Tuesday night, hitting the road for a trip to Atkins. East won that match 25-8, 25-3, 25-11 and held several members of its rotation out for entire sets, with every player on the roster getting significant playing time.
The Lady Cardinals’ service game has proven to be a strong suit this season, and it was again facing the Camels (3-10, 2-4 NW1A). East Surry had 24 service aces and just five errors, with Elise Hayes getting eight of the aces. Bethany Clayton had four, with Kendall Beck, Sarah Marion, and Grace Kiser each collecting three.
Tara Beck led East Surry with six kills, followed by Cameron Sloop with five, and Sarah Marion and Alyssa Jessup with four. Morgan Smith paced the defense with five digs, and Clayton had 26 assists.
The Lady Cardinals’ next match is a big one. The team returns to action on Tuesday night at home for a visit from North Stokes, the only team it has lost to in conference play. North Stokes (6-7, 5-1) beat East in five sets in Danbury on back on Sept. 1 in the last match before the Lady Cards went on their winning streak.
