The third annual Rivals United “No One Fights Alone” volleyball showcase will be hosted by Mount Airy High School today.
The annual event features all four area schools, each playing their county rivals from the other conference, and this year’s event will also include one junior varsity match. Proceeds from the all-day event go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, American Cancer Society and the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Each organization will receive one=third of the proceeds from gate, concessions, t-shirt sales, and 50/50 raffle ticket sales. Monetary contributions will also be accepted during the matches.
East Surry, which hosted the event in 2015, will participate in both morning matches. The Lady Cardinals (17-3), the state’s 10th-ranked 1A team according to MaxPreps.com, will take on Surry Central at 9 a.m. in the opening match, and then Western Piedmont 2A leader North Surry (14-4), the state’s fifth-ranked 2A team, in the next match at approximately 11 a.m. (times for later matches will depend on how soon the match before it is completed).
The host school will play in both of the afternoon varsity matches, against the same schools. Mount Airy (16-2), the state’s seventh-ranked 1A team will take on Central at approximately 1 p.m. Following the completion of that match, the Surry Central JV’s will play East Surry, whose junior varsity team is currently undefeated at 17-0. This match is expected to start around 3 p.m. Finally, at about 4 p.m., Mount Airy and North Surry will play each other in a battle of ranked teams.
