PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry High School and football coach David Diamont will host the seventh annual Little League Football Coaches Clinic on Sunday at the Family Life Center inside the First United Methodist Church in Pilot Mountain.
The clinic will run from 2-4 p.m. and will focus primarily on teaching the Heads-Up Football Program sponsored by the NFL to help teach techniques in blocking and tackling designed to protect players’ heads and make football safer.
The Surry County School System sent three coaches from each of the county high school football teams to a clinic at Greensboro Senior High School back in June to learn more information about the “Heads-Up” program. Surry Central head coach Monty Southern and North Surry head coach Danny Lyons will join Diamont in running Sunday’s clinic.
This is the first year East Surry has actively participated in this program. It is also the first year middle school coaches are invited to the clinic. There is no registration, as coaches are encouraged to just show up and participate.
“We take pride in passing down valuable information from the high school down to the little league coaches,” Diamont said. “If they have successful programs, that bodes well for our high school programs.”
The Cardinal coaches will quickly put their lessons to use, as East Surry will host the Gage Edwards Youth Football Camp on Monday and Tuesday. The Cardinals have hosted this camp for over 15 years, but renamed it last year to honor their fallen teammate in Edwards, who passed away in February 2015.
The camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day and costs $20 per participant. It is open to all kids through rising eighth-graders. All campers will receive a t-shirt and snacks. The East Surry football coaches and players will be the lead instructors.
“We’re going to spend most of our time teaching heads-up football,” Diamont said. “Because of that, we usually gear our camp towards kids in the East Surry pipeline, but this year’s camp will be open to everyone in the community.”
