The Mount Airy volleyball team experienced a banner season in 2015, both on and off the courts.
The American Volleyball Coaches Association gave the 2015 Lady Bears the Team Academic Excellence Award on Monday. Each year the AVCA recognizes high school and college volleyball teams that have achieved a 3.25 or higher accumulative G.P.A. for the academic school year. Mount Airy’s volleyball team achieved a 4.07 accumulative G.P.A. in 2015-2016.
Members of the honored Lady Bears are: Skyler Flippen, Alex Holder, Megan Fleming, Sadie Brooks, Madeline Mayfield, Samantha Kovack, Allie Sechrist, Shelby Taylor, Jessica Bevard, Sarah Lankford, Abby Harold, Katie Hicks and Kayla Hicks.
“I am extremely proud of this award for our team. This achievement puts the emphasis on the ‘student’ part of the phrase student-athlete,” Mount Airy coach Chuck Morris said. “Our administration and teachers at MAHS do a wonderful job with all of our students, but I am very happy for these kids who have learned the importance of time management in the delicate balance between athletics and academics.”
There were 260 teams in the nation that the AVCA announced as recipients of this achievement. Mount Airy’s volleyball team was just one of six high school teams in North Carolina that received this recognition.
On the court, the Lady Bears went 21-6, 10-1 and were outright champions in the Northwest Conference. Mount Airy advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA 1A playoffs in one of the most successful seasons in school history.
Only four members of the 2015 team graduated in June, and the Lady Bears will open their newest campaign on August 16 at Elkin.
